The Kingdom on Fife contains much that is familiar about Scotland: The internationally renowned St Andrews, Many former mining towns, picturesque fishing villages. There are moors and islands- Pictish and Viking remains, a rich musical culture as well some of the nations best fish and chips and the National Fishing Museum.

in the 18th and 19th Century it was common for coal mines to be owned by by private individuals and partnerships - often mine owners employed family and neighbours- both men and women (some of whom achieved local acclaim for their extraordinary strength and endurance). Each miner had his tag- a small metal disc or rectangle with his family name embossed that was attached to the cart used to carry their load to the surface and determine his pay- young lads would join fathers, uncles and grandfathers in the mines despite the risks (disasters were not uncommon). This practice echoes that of the fisherfolk who lived just a few miles away…
